Problem

Setting up a research project requires expertise that non-researchers often didn't have

Setting up a research project meant working through multiple pages of decisions that non-formally trained researchers often couldn't make on their own. We wanted a way to help this group create research projects more confidently and quickly.

Insight

Early discovery research established a two-phase model…

Earlier research had established that researchers think in two phases: draft quickly, then review before launch. Early prototypes built that as two discrete steps. Testing showed a problem: people felt abandoned when the collaborative chat cut over into a separate review mode. The two-phase model described what researchers wanted to accomplish, not how the product needed to be structured — what they actually wanted was a continuous loop, draft and review interleaved in one experience. We rebuilt around that instead.
